CLASSROOM LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT have found that setting clear expectations, routines, and procedures to be integral components of effective classroom management, and thus these components are also necessary for a functioning learning environment.
Students appreciate knowing what is expected of them, and knowing what to expect in their day-to-day learning, as well as what to expect from their teacher. In order to achieve learning environments conducive to learning I focus on communicating classroom expectations through discussion, visuals, and repeated verbal reminders. In my PSIII experience, the school had four rules: respect yourself and others, respect authority, respect property, and take responsibility. Enforcing these four R's really helped to reach a classroom community conducive to learning. |
KSA #7Teachers create and maintain environments that are conducive to student learning and understand student needs for physical, social, cultural and psychological security.

Establishing respectful relationships with my students is one of my strengths. I genuinely care about each of my students, and I want them to feel successful.
The first thing I do when entering a new classroom is learn all of my students names - and quickly. It shows students that I care, and is the first step to building a relationship. I also like to share some information about myself, and my hobbies, before asking the students to share information about themselves through games, biopoems, self-portraits, or filling out questionnaires. After building initial relationships, I continue to interact with my students both inside and outside of the classroom, and look for areas where I can encourage them. |
KSA #8Establishes relationships with students that respect human dignity.

In my PSIII practicum, I sent out a letter of introduction on the first day of classes, and followed up with a personal phone call to all of the parents in the first week. I know that making the first contact with parents a positive one is essential. I asked if the parents had an questions or comments, and reassured them that if they ever did have questions, comments, or even concerns, that they did not hesitate to contact me.
I had to make some difficult phone-calls home as well, but I always made sure the parents knew that I was part of a team that was looking out for the best interest of the child, and encouraged the parent to offer any insight or suggestions that they may have to help their child be successful. Additionally, I wrote notes home in students agenda - both positive "____ had a great day today," and informative "____ stayed in for recess because of ____ behavior today," to help the parents feel up-to-date on their child's school life. I believe that consistent open communication between educators and parents are key for the most effective education of children. |
KSA #12Teachers understand the importance of engaging parents purposefully and meaningfully. They know how to develop and implement strategies that create and enhance partnerships.
